Americanah Book Review

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Why I Chose This Book

If you haven’t watched Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk on “The Danger of a Single Story,” you need to do that right now. I already knew she was an incredible author; I needed to read one of her novels and this seemed like the best place to start.

About This Book

This is a deep novel following one protagonist’s life through many years growing up in Nigeria, living in the U.S., and then moving back to Nigeria during adulthood and the memory of love that followed her throughout her life.

Thoughts

Despite it’s length, I flew through this book because I got so incredibly attached to Ifemelu, the main character. While some of her decisions were not the ones I would have chosen, she is one of the realest protagonists I’ve had the pleasure of reading about. I can’t wait to read more by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and I would definitely recommend this book.

Notable Quotes

“If you don't understand, ask questions. If you're uncomfortable about asking questions, say you are uncomfortable about asking questions and then ask anyway. It's easy to tell when a question is coming from a good place. Then listen some more. Sometimes people just want to feel heard. Here's to possibilities of friendship and connection and understanding.”
